Los Angeles County Museum of Art - LACMA

Designed by Peter Zumthor, the David Geffen Galleries at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art bring art, architecture and daylight into a continuous experience. The lighting design for this vision was led by Buro Happold, whose team — under the direction of Gabe Guilliams — translated Zumthor's demanding architectural vision into a precise lighting strategy that preserves the calm of the galleries while supporting the museum's evolving exhibitions. Guilliams' leadership was instrumental in shaping the technical and aesthetic direction that guided every fixture decision on the project.
Working from this lighting design, and in close collaboration with Buro Happold, Atelier Peter Zumthor and the LACMA team, BOLD developed and manufactured the bespoke fixtures called for by that vision: the HP1 and HP2 projectors, alongside the HE2 downlights. An eighteen-month development journey of prototyping, full-scale mock-ups and refinement brought together precise optical control, restrained forms and the flexibility to accommodate changing curatorial needs.
From carefully directed light on artworks to discreet integration within the concrete ceilings, each solution responds to the lighting design Buro Happold established for the architectural setting. The result is lighting that gives art presence, respects the architecture, and allows the engineering behind it to recede.

Peter Zumthor is a Swiss architect celebrated for his sensitivity to materials, light and atmosphere. Recipient of the 2009 Pritzker Architecture Prize and the 2013 RIBA Royal Gold Medal, he creates spaces defined by sensory experience and a deep connection to place. His work includes the Therme Vals, Kunsthaus Bregenz and Kolumba Museum.
