  • Bold's challenging application at the Doubletop Village at Balsam Mountain Preserve

Developed by Chaffin/Light Associates, a recognized leader in sustainable development, Balsam Mountain Preserve is a low-density, private club community in the western North Carolina Mountains with 354 home sites on 4,400 wooded acres. Historical Concepts was commissioned to design the Boarding House, consisting of 10 forest cottages and a community clubhouse with dining facilities. Exploring the nearby mountains and inspired by the expansive "Great Camps” that emerged in the early twentieth century in the Adirondacks, the design team re-created the mountain lodge concept slightly adapting it to fit the context of the North Carolina mountain vernacular.
Lighting designer, AmyAnn Ehmcke of Lux et Veritas Design was looking for a small-scale fixed downlight that could offer an output of at least 1,200 lumens, in a small aperture, and capable of being installed in a cored wooden beam. This demanding application made Bold’s 3" downlights a perfect solution. Furthermore, the low glare was a key feature required for this rustic, welcoming and warm space. With its black trim, its deep regressed optics, and its flexibility to be installed in a solid cored wood beam, the Pi 3" downlight from Bold fit perfectly this application.
